Competitions FAQ

Why I do what I do...

Originally the idea came from the forums at conceptart.org. There are challenges there that anyone can hold with other members. I saw a challenge to do the characters from the Arcade game Primal Rage. The challenge passed many by, I wondered why? Myself I was keen to sculpt monster like dinos fighting each other, then it hit me. Materials are expensive, not everyone can afford to put the time and costs in for little or no return. So I figured, make it worth their while.

Since that naive thought I've realised the greater good the competitions can do;

Focusing raw talent by setting a brief.

Giving a strict timescale to work to.

Raising the bar, encouraging participants to do their best work.

Encouraging more interaction between members.

Raised profile awarness of the participating artists.

Rewarding hard work.

Also adding another piece to an artist's portfolio.

So far I've self funded the prizes, with the exception of Craftmill.co.uk donateing a couple blocks of sculpey to help out. I'm happy to continue putting in what I can but my funds are limited so I'm always keen to discuss help with this subject.

For the future I'd like to make this an Annual event attracting worldwide artists to take part. The competitions don't need to be massive as I don't wont to alienate those new to sculpting.

I've really enjoyed the experiences so far and get great satisfaction form helping others develop their skills and enjoy their art.

What does it cost me to take part?

Mostly just your time. If you're already sculpting you've probably got all the materials you need. If you've never sculpted before you're going to need some basic kit. Do your research, you don't have to fork out a tonne of cash just to get going.

Yes materials are at your own cost. Use as much or a little as you like. At the end of the day you get to keep what you make anyway.

What and when will next years comp be?

I haven't fixed the dates yet. Most likey late summer towards Halloween. The theme isn't decided, I have something in mind but would love to hear your suggestions.
